Psalm 122 - besides being our 122 day of reading a psalm a day - is day 3, or rather it is the third psalm of ascent. The first psalm of ascent guides us to call on God when we are in distress, knowing that He will answer. The second psalm of ascent has us looking to the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth for our help.
The third psalm of ascent is a psalm of rejoicing as the worshippers are headed to the house of the Lord and a call for prayer. Both of these verses are very familiar and loved verses.
The New American Standard Bible translates verse 1 like this
I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD."
The Holman Christian Standard says,
I rejoiced with those who said to me,
"Let us go to the house of the LORD."
What I like about this and what is seen in verse 3 is thought of us going "together." "Solidly joined together" is how it is worded in the Holman. That is how we should be as God's people - solidly joined together. (You may now preach your own sermon to yourself as to how YOU can make this verse true in your life and your church.)
The other familiar verse is verse 6.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem : "May they prosper who love you.
In trying to decide what to write about this verse I went to Wikipedia (you just can't find a good World Book Encyclopedia any more) and read about Jerusalem (which was VERY interesting, by the way) Jerusalem - it's history as told by the wiki world I saw that it has NOT been a city of peace even though most will agree it's name means "city of peace" or something similar.
The more I read about Jerusalem the more I realized that there will never be peace in Jerusalem until the Lord's return. So even though we need to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (despite the fact that it will probably never happen) in that prayer we need to say with the Apostle John "Even so, Lord Jesus, come quickly!"
