You may know the name John Newton as the writer of the text of "Amazing Grace." He wrote many other hymn texts.
Another of his very well known hymn texts is "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken." The text was based on Psalm 87:3, Psalm 48 and Isaiah 33:20-21. (Which is why I'm blogging about it on a post about Psalm 87.
The tune was written by Franz Joseph Hayden. He wanted a national anthem as impressive as the one England had so he wrote this tune.
You may recognize the tune AUSTRIA.
It's not a hymn we sing at Hilldale, but many churches around the world sing it all the time. It's a beautiful tune and a great text.
