Sunday begins our "Every Believer a Witness" revival, so we'll begin our service singing "Mighty to Save" followed by "Tell Me the Story of Jesus." When we sing it we'll perk it up a bit with a little bit of a Latin feel and I've added a little chorus to it.
We'll also sing "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High." This little chorus has the complete gospel in a nutshell. "You came from heaven to earth to show the way. From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay. From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the skies. Lord, I lift Your name on high."

The text to Tell Me the Story of Jesus was written by Fanny Crosby.

(some guy and his family took the pictures) It's a little slow and they don't sing in a key that a congregation can sing in, but they have an incredible sound! Such wondrful harmony and blending of voices. This is from their CD "Let the Worshippers Arise." You should go out and buy this CD.

Sweeter than Honey - Sunday's Music

I love honey!
I remember once as a child that mom or dad brought home one of those little collections of honey from different kinds of plants. There was clover honey, barley honey, probably ragweed honey. It was all good! and once or twice I remember getting honey in a jar and a big hunk of the honeycomb was in there too. That was so awesome! Can you still get honey that way?

Some people say if you eat honey made in your area that it will help you with your allergies. Sounds good to me!

Honey it hot tea is yummy! Honey on Pillsbury crescent rolls is the perfect ending to your Sunday dinner!

And Honey Nut Cheerios make a great breakfast (and apparently they're good for your cholesterol. What a deal!

I learned a song when I was a teenager from Psalm 19 that talks about honey. (Paul Purifoy taught it to us. He led music for a retreat we were on. I wonder if he's still around. I haven't heard the song anywhere else, so maybe he wrote it. It's about the word and the words of the song were pretty much straight out of - hmmm, probably KJV - it was the mid 70's after all.)

Anyway, these verses from Psalm 19 compare the Word of God to the sweetness of honey and the honeycomb. Is your desire for God's Word as strong as your desire for honey? Have you found it to be as sweet?

7 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul ; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart ; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever ; The judgments of the LORD are true ; they are righteous altogether. 10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold ; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them Your servant is warned ; In keeping them there is great reward.

For more great verses about God's word check out Psalm 119. Psalm 119 has 176 verses that talk about the word of God. It uses many words as synonyms for God's word - testimonies, precepts, statutes, commandments, word, law...

The verse from Psalm 119 that you probably know is 105 "Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path." We'll be singing that verse Sunday morning.

Ancient Words - I learned my love for God's word from my dad, Bill, and from my home church pastor, Dr. Tom Elliff. I didn't pick the music for my dad's funeral two years ago (almost two years) but it was very fitting that we sang "Ancient Words" then.

 

I hope as we sing these songs Sunday morning that you will sing out of your love for God's Word - and more importantly, I hope you will spend some time in His Word between now and then.

Come, Thou Almighty King

"Come, Thou Almighty King? Why would you sing an old hymn like that?"
 I'm so glad you asked.

First of all, just because something is "old" doesn't mean it's bad and just because something is "new" doesn't mean it is good. The way to judge a song is first, by it's text - Is it scriptural? Does it make sense? Is it well written?
Come, Thou Almighty King gets great marks on all three of those questions.
Then a song should be judged by it's tune - Is it singable? Is it boring? Does it have a nice melodic line?
Again, this tune passes with flying colors.

I'm afraid too often we judge a song by whether or not it sounds good on a guitar. There is something wondrously majestic about a grand hymn such as this one played on a big pipe organ in a beautiful sanctuary. (There are a lot of times I really miss having a nice organ.) But, you know, this song actually would be just fine played on a guitar.

 A good song is good no matter how it is presented. If a person can only worship if the instrumentation is exactly how he likes it then I fear he may be worshipping the music rather than the Creator of music.

As we sing these words, my prayer is that you will sing them as a prayer - that they will echo the sentiments of your heart, that God will "show up" and help us to praise Him.

There were a lot of YouTube vids of this song. What a great song! here's a nice rendition by the choirs of Lee University. They really liked it I guess 'cause they kept repeating the chorus.

The choir will be singing a beautiful song this Sunday titled "I Will Carry You." The chorus says,

"O my child, when you can't go on another mile, I will carry you.

You can trust Me and I, I will carry you."

The thing that makes it so powerful is that so many of us can sing these words from hearts made strong in our faith because we have experienced first-hand the words of this song.

For those of you at Hildale who will hear this song this Sunday, I hope you will come to worship with some of those difficult times in life in mind with the memories of how God brought you through them.

Catching Up

We've had a wonderful week at the Southern Baptist Convention. It is always wonderful to hear the great stories and testimonies of how God is at work through our churches, pastors, missionaries, NAMB, IMB, Baptist Global Response, etc.

The wonder of the Southern Baptist Convention, hmmm, wonder may not be the right word... well, anyway, the thing that is really awesome is how thousands of autonimous churches freely work together and give to the Cooperative Program to support mission efforts around the world. Thousands of missionaries from other denominations have to spend a lot of time raising support, asking for money, hoping a church or individual somewhere will help them get equipment they need, or dollars for a salary (you still have to eat and live when you are a missionary, you know), or supplies or other needs. Southern Baptist Missionaries in North America (NAMB) or around the world through our International Mission Board (IMB) can go right to work on the field knowing that churches from 30 to 30,000 members are working together, praying together and giving together to give them what they need to do their work.

The Southern Baptist Convention is like a giant church business meeting. We vote on things, elect officers, hear reports, sometimes fuss about things, but in the end, we are brothers and sisters in Christ working together to further the Kingdom.

Since I have been in Orlando and not with my computer I am behind on some blogging. Here we go catching up a little.

Memory Monday
Here's a short one since you just have a few days.

Ephesians 2:14 For He Himself is our peace.

In context, this verse is talking about how Christ brought peace between the Jewish and Gentile believers. But I think in the broader view of life in general, the Southern Baptist Convention, in our local churches in everything - for us to have peace we must have Jesus Himself as our peace.

If that verse was to easy and you want more to memorize or at least put in your heart for later reference, look at Philippians 4:6-7. I memorized these verses as a teenager and have practiced them in my life thousans of times through the years.

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I don't really remember. I do know it is Father's Day so we are singing some songs that refer to God as our Father.
One I remember for Sunday is...

We also have a men's quartet singing The Lord's Prayer. Our Father, which art in heaven.

It's Memorial Day weekend, you know, but we'll only sing one patriotic song. I was thinking about how the men and women in our armed services act as servants to us as they defend our land. From there I traveled along the thought path of how we, as Christians, should live as servants to each other and how the world will know that we are Christians by how we love and serve each other.

This Sunday we are singing some songs that we haven't sung in a while. I'm not sure why. Especially since "Glorious Is Thy Name" is one of my favorite hymns ever.

It was written by B.B. McKinney. It has a fantastic text and the tune is one you can really sing out on.

On Mission Conference - Sunday's Music

Our On Mission Conference begins tonight (Friday, April 30) and concludes Sunday morning. We will sing some great songs that emphasize two things.
1. Salvation through Jesus Christ
2. Us sharing that Good News to the world

We'll begin with Jesus Saves and Hear Our Praises
The chorus of Hear Our Praises has the phrase "from the heavens to the nations hear our praises rise to You." That's the whole point of missions - to bring more worshippers to Jesus Christ.

The choir will then sing a song called "Here Am I, Send Me." I hope this song will give voice to your desire - or that it will inspire in you the desire to say, "Here am I, Lord, send me. Send me to praise Your name. To all the world proclaim. With all of my heart and soul, Lord, I'll give all I have to make You known. Here am I, Lord, send me."

Then we'll sing just a verse of "Tell Me the Story," a verse of ,... um... I can't remember.. and end up with a song that may be new to some of you, "Song for the Nations." Play it a time or two here so you can practice for Sunday morning. It's easy.




Oh, and by the way. I've totally lost my voice. I can only wisper. This had NEVER happened to me in the 34 years I've been leading worship. I'm praying I can sing Sunday, but YOU all may have to sing out more to help me out.

Sunday's Music - Feb. 28

I didn't forget! Some of you like to know before Sunday morning what we will be singing. Hmm, maybe those folks practice before they come. Not a bad idea.

We'll begin with "Days of Elijah" which is always fun to sing.

Then the choir will sing "Miracle Man" which is from our Passion Play. (coming up April 1-3) Since that song tells a lot of the ministry of Christ I thought it would be good then for all of us to sing "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High" which tells Jesus' life and mission very concisely.
