Instruments on Mission - Getting a Second Life

Remember that clarinet that your daughter just had to have so she could play in the band and then decided one week into it that she really wanted to play the guitar instead?

Or maybe your child loved playing in band so much that the $200 trumpet wasn't good enough. No... you had to buy a $1200 trumpet. Now the $200 one is just sitting in your closet wishing someone would oil up the valves and make it useful again.

Whatever the story of the instrument in your closet that hasn't seen the light of day for years, we have an offer of a second chance - a second life - for that old flute. Some people turn old instruments into lamps and such.

Here's an option for an unused flute that will further the Kingdom.

Bro. Paul has a pastor friend in Venezuela that is reaching out to children in his community through music. He is teaching children to play the trumpet or clarinet or flute or other band instruments.

OK. Now you know how. Give your instruments a second chance at life, bring joy to a child's heart and give a pastor an opportunity to share the Gospel. It's a win-win-win proposition.

Wind and Fire update

My original thoughts in naming this group had to do with the fact that most of the players play "wind" instruments and "wind and fire" represent the work of the Holy Spirit. It seemed like a cool, youthful name. and I suppose it is. However, I hear "Earth, Wind and Fire" a lot from people referring to this ensemble, so maybe it's too close to that.

What I want to tell you today is how GREAT they sounded last night. It was a lot of fun playing together. We had 2 flutes, 3 clarinets, 1 alto sax, 1 tenor sax, 2 trombones and a percussionist with yours truly playing the keyboard. I'm not very good at that while directing, so if any of you piano players out there want to join us, please let me know. There's room for more, so encourage your band students to join us. Oh, and not everyone is a student. We have a couple of adults playing with us too. We'll be playing the offertory in just a couple of weeks!

A Good Day

We had a good day at Hilldale today. The choir sounded great on their song and Tyson did a great job with the solo. The congregation sang well - even on songs that were a little new to them. Our guest speaker, Dr. Geoff Hammand, President of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, delivered a powerful challenge to us to Seize a Divine Moment.
Then, Sunday night we heard mission reports in the service, had a good number in AWANA and LIFE University and - the part that has to do with music/worship - we had a great handbell rehearsal and StudentZ PraiZe choir rehearsal with 40 students there.

And... I had two flute players and a clarinet player tell me they were going to come to our Wind and Fire rehearsal.

It is so fun to have everyone all excited about our music/worship ministry. I see really great days ahead as we work and rehearse together getting ready for missions and worship and special events adn "the tree" and more. Woohoo!

Whenever I can get access to a computer and the internet I'll put a note here on the blog about my mission trip to Wales.

Wind and Fire

We've had a nice beginning to our Wind and Fire Ensemble. We have a very interesting combination of instruments right now: a flute, clarinet, bassoon, tenor sax, trombone and electric bass who also plays trumpet. I have piano parts available and am looking for a pianist that isn't already involved in our music/worship ministry to join us. We could also use a couple more treble instruments.

We sounded really good last night. It's going to be a lot of fun playing together. You'll be hearing from us soon.

Wind and Fire Begins This Week

I'm reallllly excited! Our "Wind and Fire" instrumental ensemble begins THIS Wednesday night. We'll rehearse from 5:30-6:10 in "The Crow's Nest" (located above the choir room). To get there, go through the Sanctuary to the double doors on the left front. Just inside the doors you'll see a sign for Wind and Fire and a stairwell leading up to The Crow's Nest.

We have a good group signed up so far. We have trumpets and trombones and clarinets and at least one flute and a saxophone or two...

Bring someone with you - well, that is if they play a band or orchestra instrument - and join us this Wednesday night. Call the Music Ministry office if you have questions or for more information.
