Memory Help

Disclaimer - Blogger has a new really cool editing part for putting up new posts, but I haven't found the spell check button. I think I did OK, but sometimes my fingers get going so fast that I tangle up some of the words.

Some of you seem to be a little overwhelmed at this week's memory challenge Memory Monday January 25
So here's a little help for you.

Psalm 1
Notice the progression of the man or men or persons described in verse 1.
First, he's wallking - Walk in the counsel
then standing - Stand in the path
then sitting - Sit in the seat

Then there is
First he's just listening - The counsel of the wicked
Oops, now he's on the way - The path of sinners
and now he's totally jumped in 'cause he's sitting right there with them - The seat of scoffers.

Isn't this like the progression of Abraham's nephew Lot? In Genesis 13 we see that he pitched his tent toward Sodom even though it had a reputation as a wicked place. In Genesis 14 we see that Lot now lives in Sodom and by Genesis 19 Lot is sitting at the gate where the leaders of the city would be.
This is a good warning to all of us. Those sins that so easily grab us Hebrews 12:1 often follow this same path. First we are just kind of looking that direction, then we just sort of move in real close and then before we know it - boom - we are sitting right in the middle of the mess and we say, "How did that happen?" Well... perhaps it began when we started to "walk in the counsel of the wicked." How blessed would we be if we didn't go down this path?

Oops - I've gone to preachin'

So put those thoughts together and you end up with:

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

Verse 2 tells us how he avoids all of that.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates both day and night.

I'm praying that you will be able to not only memorize verses 1-2 of Psalm 1 but that more importantly you will be able to heed these great words of instruction and avoid ending up sitting in" the seat of scoffers."
