Israel has always had a lot of enemies. I suppose that's because Satan hates God so much that he will always try to attack God's people.
So since this is a song of ascents it is one of the psalms that the people would recite as they made their way to Jerusalem or to the temple. It reminded them that from the time Israel was a young nation they were oppressed by others.
But this psalm also reminds them that they were not overcome and that the LORD cut them free from the cords of the wicked.
I think what we can learn from this is that God is the one who will cut us free from the cords of the wicked. Perhaps we're not being attacked by a particular person, but maybe attacked by an addiction, or troubles at home, or any number of things. God is the one who can/will set us free and cut the cords. Maybe knowing this will make a difference in how you pray about such things. Give it a try and let me know your thoughts.
